Esther: Tell us about 'bang'!
DASUKI: Growing up, music was the way awareness was spread.
All the music that is still relevant today bore one form of message or another.
Unfortunately making such music seems to have become a lost art- and the reason
isn’t too far to see.
Making music with
a message requires actually sitting down to PLAN what you want to say and how
you want to say it. But in this instant gratification generation, very few
artistes want to be the one saddled with that responsibility. They’re too busy
trying to make a “hit” rather than pass a message across. We live in a selfish
generation and it shows in our musical expressions. And that’s why the music
never lasts- give today’s hit songs 6months and they become “oldies”. Meanwhile
music Fela released before we were born still get healthy spins today and will
still be relevant tomorrow.
Esther: May we know you? I know you used to be in a Rap group...
DASUKI: I go by the name DaSuKi,
and yes I belong to a group called the Kalifate.
We’re still together, but music is no longer one of our priority projects.
The only reason I
decided to return to rap (and music in general) was because nobody was talking
about these issues. Our “superstars” seem to be too busy fighting for
endorsements and doing songs about balling and shaking backsides to care that
week in week out hundreds of Nigerians die. It’s been on for almost four years
now and in a country of over 10thousand artists dropping hundreds of songs
everyday, it’s quite shocking that such an important issue has never been
considered worth discussing on songs. Maybe they’re waiting for a few of them
(artists) to die at the hands of Boko Haram before they consider it worth
singing about.
Esther: This is a good initiative! How do you think we can make this
bigger and make it spread farther? We have to do more about these Bombings and
I believe 'music communicates'. We can spread a message that will cause a
change.
DASUKI: The only way so far seems to be to find other
selfless Nigerians who can help push this song and spread it as far as they
can, because due to the delicate nature of the subject, practically no
corporate organization is willing to risk associating themselves with it. So
it’s up to the “you’s and I’s” of this nation- people who care.
But now, those who
want relevant music finally have a choice.
Esther: Where can we download the song?
